Lacy Cap Pattern

Materials:
Less than half of a 6-oz skein of TLC Baby in Pinkie
Set of double-pointed needles US size 6 (4 mm)
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 18 sts per 4 inches in k2tog,yo pattern

Size: I have a large head and thick hair (about 23" around), and this cap is made to fit loosely. So if you have a smaller head or want a tighter fit, you can either subtract 4 sts for every inch (approx) difference in head size, or just use thinner yarn with a tighter gauge to get the right fit. Or you can make it as is, and it might turn out with more of a beret or tam look.

Cast on 108 sts and distribute to 3 dpns (36 on each). Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Work 6 rounds in k2,p2 ribbing.
Lace Pattern:
Round 1: *k2tog, yo*; repeat between*s around.
Round 2: knit around.
Repeat these 2 rounds 17 more times.
Crown Shaping:
Round 1: *k2tog, [k2tog, yo] 8 times*; repeat between *s around - 102 sts rem.
Round 2 and all even rounds: knit around.
Round 3: *k3tog, yo, [k2tog, yo] 7 times*; repeat between *s around - 96 sts.
Round 5: *k2tog, [k2tog, yo] 7 times*; repeat between *s around - 90 sts.
Round 7: *k3tog, yo, [k2tog, yo] 6 times*; repeat btween *s around - 84 sts.
Round 9: *k2tog, [k2tog, yo] 6 times*; repeat between *s around - 78 sts.
Round 11: *k3tog, yo, [k2tog, yo] 5 times*; repeat btween *s around - 72 sts.
Round 13: *k2tog, [k2tog, yo] 5 times*; repeat between *s around - 66 sts.
Round 15: *k3tog, yo, [k2tog, yo] 4 times*; repeat btween *s around - 60 sts.
Round 17: *k2tog, [k2tog, yo] 4 times*; repeat between *s around - 54 sts.
Round 19: *k3tog, yo, [k2tog, yo] 3 times*; repeat btween *s around - 48 sts.
Round 21: *k2tog, k2tog, yo*; repeat between *s around - 36 sts.
Round 23: *k3tog, yo*; repeat between *s around - 24 sts.
Round 25: *k2tog, k2tog, yo*; repeat between *s around - 18 sts.
Round 27: k2tog around - 9 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Use tapestry needle to thread end through remaining loops. Put tight and tie off. Weave in ends.

Any questions, just ask.

This pattern is intended for personal use only. Please do not try to sell it or any product made from it. Thank you.

Wow, thanks so much for posting that! The hat is great, I can't wait to make it! Did you invent it yourself, or did you get the pattern from somewhere?

Nice pattern

Would you mind if I post this on Craftacular.com?

Re: Nice pattern

Sure, as long as you credit me. To be honest, I'd never heard of Crafticular before, so I checked it out. It looks like it has the potential to become a really awesome resource. Good luck with it! If you're interested, I have more of my own free patterns linked on the sidebar of my LJ. Any questions can be sent to CarissaLB at yahoo dot com.

Hi! I hate to open up an old post, but I'm trying out your pattern for the first time and I'm having a problem on the first decrease row. The way I read it is: k2tog, then do (k2tog, yo) eight times, k2tog again and do the part in parenthesis so on and so on... but then the row ends with 4 random stitches and I didn't have the 102 stitches I'm supposed to have. Am I reading that part right?

[info]knitphomaniac

December 27 2006, 15:17:17 UTC 5 years ago

Yes, I believe you are reading it correctly: k2tog, do the parentheses 8 times, k2tog, parentheses x8, k2tog, parentheses x8, and so on all the way around. Each repeat of the stuff between the *s requires 18 sts, so you it should use up all 108 sts (18 sts * 6 repeats) that you started with. And each repeat leaves only 17 sts remaining, so you should end up with 102 sts (17 sts * 6 repeats) after the first decrease round. Are you sure you have 108 sts before you start that round? Or perhaps you're forgetting to yarn over after some of the k2togs. Or maybe you're accidentally doing a yarn over after the first k2tog of each repeat when you shouldn't. I hope I've helped. Feel free to ask more questions if you need to. And I'd love to see pictures when you're finished.

question

hi. i'm a beginner and i'm trying your pattern. there's something i didn't do right. I started to do k2tog, yo, first row, and then knit the second one; same thing again with row 3 and 4 but that decreases the number of stitches since i'm doing 2tog and the yo doesn't create a stitch. ...??

Re: question

The yarnover should create a stitch, and you should keep the same number of stitches on every round until the crown shaping part. How are you doing the yo? After you k2tog, bring the yarn to the front between the needles (as if you were about to purl), but then bring it up and over the right needle and back to the back of your work. A yo doesn't require you to knit or purl any of the stitches on the left needle, but it does create one out of nothing.
Here are some illustrations, in case that didn't make sense:
Video - all the way at the bottom of the page on the right
Mini video - shows a yo between two regular knit sts
Illustration - 5th one down
Illustration 2 - about half way down the page

Hope that helps.

I just found your pattern, and I think it's quite brilliant. You see too many hats like this crocheted, and I, personally, am not fond of crocheting, so when I found this in a knit pattern, I was very excited! I should have it done within the next month. I'll post pictures, too! Thanks again.

this hat is adorable!

I really like this hat. I am a novice knitter, learning to do circular knitting. Can this hat be made using a circular needle?

[info]knitphomaniac

Re: this hat is adorable!

Glad you like it. The main part can be done with a circular needle as long as it is no longer than the circumference of the hat (stitches can be squished onto a shorter needle, but not stretched out over a longer one). However, once you get to the crown shaping and the top of the hat gets too small for the circular, you'll need to switch to double-pointed needles. But dpns are nothing to be scared of. You're really only working with two needles at a time; the others are just acting as stitch holders when not is use. Good luck! And let me know if you have any further questions.

I don't suppose you have or know a good scarf pattern that would look like a set with this hat? Because this is an adorable hat, but I want to make a set for my daughter for Christmas. *grin*

Not off the top of my head, but you could easily make one. Just cast on a multiple of 2 sts, plus any border sts you want. Work the bottom border in garter/seed/ribbing/whatever. Then Row 1: work right border sts, *k2tog, yo* across to left border, work left border sts. Row 2: right border, purl across to left border, left border. Repeat those two rows until you have your desired length, work the ending border and bind off.

Hope that helps!

I am baffled

Hi, I have started this cap 4 times now and each time come up with only 105 stitches after the first lace round. it seems to make sense to me considering that if one k2tg, yo for the entire round then the last stitch on each dpn would only create a single stitch from two. what doesn't make sense is moving onto the crown shaping with only 105 stitches when the pattern seems to need an even number of stitches to be correct. I really like the look of the lace and am determined to finish this cap. what am I doing wrong?

Re: I am baffled

wait, what i meant is that when I go to repeat this round after the knit round then I only have 35 sts on each needle. doesn't this make a decrease in every k2tg, yo round by 3 sts?

I love this hat! I know this is like 3 yrs old; I think I found the link to your page off the freeknittingpatterns website. Just discovered knitting this summer and am well on my way to being completely obsessed already.
Just had to say that I'm going to start knitting this today; it will match (somewhat) my yo, k2tog scarf that I made, yay.
(BTW my head is just as 'large' as yours, a fact that I am very grateful for!)

i'm not so much a fan of dpns and don't have circulars; would it work to knit it flat and add 2 stitches to each end for the seam? also, for the decreasing, do you repeat the k3tog then yo, k2tog 7 times? With how I've done decreases thus far in my knitterly life, that would make sense. But the fact that yo, K2tog is in parentheses right before "x times" is confusing me. I hope I'm not a bother, I'm just really loving this hat!!! Thanks!

In the original post, you say This pattern is intended for personal use only. Please do not try to sell it or any product made from it.

I am curious, if we modify this pattern on our own and then make the hat from the modified pattern, would you have a problem with someone selling it? I changed the pattern on my own and would like to possibly make these to sell, but I don't want to sell it if you would have a problem with that.

I have a picture of what the hat looks like after I modified the pattern, if you would like to see the difference.

[info]knitphomaniac

December 4 2009, 16:22:15 UTC 2 years ago

That depends on how much you've modified it. If it's just changing the stitch counts to make a different size or accommodate a differently-gauged yarn, then I'd prefer you not sell them. If, on the other hand, you've modified it significantly, as to really make it your own, such as using a different lace pattern or completely overhauling the method of crown shaping, then go right ahead. Ultimately, I have no way of physically moderating the end use of this pattern, so I leave it up to you and your conscience to decide if you have modified it "enough".

Haha, you weren't kidding when you said it's large. XDDD
/didn't heed your warning about its size
The one I made it for really likes slouchy hats, though, so it all works out. :]

I love this pattern. But when you say "Please do not try to sell it or any product made from it." do you mean that I can't sell the hats I make from this pattern? I know what the first part meant, but the second part got my head tilting to the side in confusion.

That's correct. If you'd like to make them for donation to a charity or even a charity auction, that's fine. But I don't appreciate people trying to make a profit from my intellectual property.
