Last month I posted a picture of a Katamari bag I made. I finally got around to working out the pattern (for the most part). Any improvements on this pattern would be greatly appreciated since, as is the case with many self-made patterns, it is kind of a trial and error process.
I got the basic pattern for it from this strawberry bag someone posted a while ago.
For this particular bag, I used Patons Astra on size 8 needles, which gave me a guage of 18 stitches/24 rows=4 inches. This is something that can be made with left-over yarn and at any size, but adjustments do not seem too difficult to make. You will also need fabric for the lining, one pair straight needles, five DPNs (or one pair of circular needles).
CO 72 sts on straight needles (if using circulars, do not join)
[St st 2 rows, change color] 3X
P 1 row
[St st 2 rows, change color] 3X
Divide stitches evenly and transfer onto four DPNs (unless using circs)
Fold in half at purl row, pick up sts from row 1, k row 1 together with next row, and join
K 24 rows (4")
1st dec. row: Dec. 1 at beginning of each DPN and K in between (68 sts)
K next row
2nd dec. row: Dec. 1 at end of each DPN and K in between (64 sts)
K next row
Repeat dec. sequence for 4"/24 rows. There should be 24 sts left at the end.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail, thread through last row, and pull yarn tightly through the inside of the bag.
For the bumps:
CO 48 sts, divide evenly on 4 DPNs and join
K 2 rows, change color
Dec. 1 at beginning of each DPN and K in between
Dec. 1 at end of each DPN and K in between
Change color, repeat dec. sequence three more times (should have 5 stripes on bump) until you have 16 sts left
Cut yarn leaving a long tail, thread yarn through last row, and pull tightly through the inside of the bump.
I-cord:
CO 3 sts on a DPN
K 1 row, slide sts to other end of needle, K next row (do not turn over), repeat until cord is desired length
*if doing this on straight needles, just slip the stitches onto other needle
Finishing:
Thread I-cord through the folded section at the top of the bag
Sew bumps onto surface of the bag
Cut fabric into triangles and sew one point from each together for the bottom, then sew the sides together
Sew lining into bag
I hope this is understandable.
